Groundhog’s Day and other Jubilees 2012

Winter, slumbering in the open air, wears on its smiling face a dream… of spring.

This is one time where television really fails to capture the true excitement of a large squirrel predicting the weather.

Greetings and hello to February! You may notice that these weekly emails won’t be coming quite so frequently. I’m switching to a twice a month schedule in an effort to be less of a nuisance. Not so “nuisanceical” – if you will. I suppose this means that they are no longer weekly emails. Perhaps “bi-monthly music updates” is a bit unwieldy but more accurate. Perhaps bi-polar but I’ve never been much for travel to extreme locales. Expect updates around the 1st and 15th.

Now would be a good time to make sure that you are connected with me on Facebook, Bud’s Music Page, Twitter or any combination thereof so that you get up-to-date schedule reminders. I also try to keep things as current as possible on BudSummers.com

Recording and mastering of my new CD tentatively titled “Midnight Clear” is complete. This album is a collection of my instrumental arrangements of fifteen holiday songs. Here’s a sample Midnight Clear . Artwork is next and then production.

You can pre-order a copy for just $10 and I’ll ship it for free!
Send me a check and a note with the address you want it shipped to at this locale:

Bud Summers
936 Albers Lane
Bethalto, IL 62010

or use your paypal account to send $10 to sumbuds4u@yahoo.com or catch up with me at a show before March 15th to pre-order. Be sure to include a mailing address. Great Gift Idea as Well! Order one for a friend! You can make multiple orders with the same check. Just be sure to include the address for each order.

February made me shiver….. but I’ll be playing tunes at a few places in order to keep warm.

Happy Groundhog Day!

January 20th, 27th & 28th 2012

You sweat out the free agent thing in November then you make the trades in December. Then you struggle to sign the guys left in January and in February I get down to sewing all the new numbers on the uniforms. Whitey Herzog

Well hello! It’s been a while. Although I’ve been on a break from playing out I’ve not been idle. I’ve just finished recording my 4th CD and have given it to Gary Will for mastering. It will be a “Christmas Instrumentals” album with just a few guitar parts on each cut. I figured it was a good idea to get it done while the music was still well-rehearsed from this year’s holiday season. You can preview a couple of songs Midnight Clear and Merry Gentlemen on my soundcloud page.

I was hoping to have this available by fall… but things are way ahead of schedule right now. The CD might be out in June so you can start your Christmas shopping early! That’s just what we need; start the holiday season in the summer.

I’m getting back out to play again soon. On Friday the 20th I’ll be at The Culinaria in downtown STL for “Sips in the City”. This is a cool event. A $5 donation to a worthy cause will get you a couple of drink tickets and free appetizers from 5-7. My friend the stellar bassist Jason McAtee will be joining me for this one.

On Friday January 27th I”ll be back at Parrots Sports Bar in St Charles, MO. Saturday January 28th I’ll be close to home with a show at Sunset Bar & Grill in Godfrey, IL. Chris and Kim graciously asked me to come back after a fun Thanksgiving Eve show there. The inimitable Bill Sehlmeyer will join me on percussion for the evening.

December 9th & 10th

I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.”
~ Charles Dickens

What I don’t like about office Christmas parties is looking for a job the next day.
Phyllis Diller

Greetings! As Christmas is drawing near I’d like to mention that I will again be playing some pre-service holiday music at St Paul’s Episcopal Church at the corner of 3rd and Market St in Alton, IL on the 24th starting around 3:30 pm with a service at 4 pm.

As the weather turns colder I’m reminded of a story from my incredibly happy childhood. We’ll call this one:

“Mom and Dad Go out for the Evening and Leave the Older Kids in Charge of Bud”

It was a cold, dark, windy, wet, winter night. Mom and Dad went out to dinner. I, as usual was acting like a perfect child. No arguing about that. My older sister and brother were tormenting me as usual. I had finally had enough. I grabbed a few belongings (extra socks, mittens, a hat and coat, one and one half cookies, an apple and a twinkie) and set out for the wilds of the vacant lot out back. I was out there for what seemed like minutes when I realized that it was really cold. I set out on my journey back to the house only stopping to finish the twinkie. When I arrived at the back door, I found it to be locked. No worries, I went around to the side door. To my puzzlement, it also was locked. Dare I go around front and try that door? I did. Locked. But this time I heard a voice saying “go back to the side door, it will be open”. I rushed gratefully ‘round to the side just in time to hear the bolt slide into place. A voice said “go ‘round to the back door, it will be open”. Again, puzzled but grateful I sped on wings of anticipated warmth to the back door only to hear it click shut. Now I heard the mirthful voices of my siblings laughing and carrying on with great pleasure at my distress. Their amusement was gratifying to me and we spent the better part of the evening playing this game until they finally had enough and left a door open. Upon entering, I exchanged pleasantries with them and went off to bed. All is well that ends well.I never did figure out where the voices were coming from.

Need a stocking stuffer or two? From now until Christmas you can get any of my CDs- Golden, Eons or Live in Chicago or a Can’t Stop The BS T Shirt for just $5 each. This is only available through this mailing list. If you want something just drop me a line and we’ll work out the details.

Please join me for a few tunes this week at:

Have a great week and I hope to see you again soon,

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,
Jack Frost nipping on your nose,
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir,
And folks dressed up ….. ……………
Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe,
Help to make the season bright.
Tiny tots with their eyes … ……..
Will find it hard to sleep tonight.

They know that Santa’s on his way;
He’s loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh.
And every mother’s child is going .. ……….
To see if reindeer really know how to fly.

And so I’m offering this simple phrase,
To kids from one to …….. ………..
Although its been said many times, many ways,
A very Merry Christmas to you

If you feel that it’s time to move along and get yourself off of this list I’d like you to take some time to think of the people in the world who have nothing this Christmas. I can hear the wheels turning now. Well, if you gotta go click here.

“Whether the weather be fine, Whether the weather be not, Whether the weather be cold, Whether the weather be hot, We’ll weather the weather, Whatever the whether, Whether we like it or not”
“Now Autumn’s fire burns slowly along the woods And day by day the dead leaves fall and melt.”
William Allingham

Greetings and welcome to Christmas Creep. I suppose CC has been with us since around Halloween but I try not to get into the spirit unnecessarily early. You know me – so super joyful and all full of mirth that unless I keep it under control I’m likely to become a public nuisance.

I hope you had a good Thanksgiving and a big Thank YOU to those who made it to visit with me for a tune or two. This week will be somewhat quiet with only a return to Halfway Haus and an evening at Candicci’s planned.
If you’d like to hear one of my recordings, just stop by my Soundcloud.com/budsummers page and you can hear the 2008 version of “I Might Fall” or the 2010 version of “One More”. I’ll be adding more songs to this site in the future.

This week:

Saturday Dec 3rd

Have a fine week and I hope to see you again soon. Real soon.

A winter’s day
In a deep and dark December;
I am alone,
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow.
I am a ______,
I am an island.

It’s easy to get off of this email list. This is not like some of those disreputable sites that claim you can get out any time but then they really make it difficult by having some long-winded schpeel that goes on forever and never really gets down to what it is that you have to do in order to get out and all and they really drive you crazy because they’re just so stupid and what’s the point anyway cause if’n you wanna go – well I always say just go and don’t you no nevermind about nothin’ else cause you know shoot you gotta do what you gotta do an like l always say a bird in the hand is worth two in the zoo and whatever life brings you you just gotta take back and two wrights make an airplane and it is what it is. So, if you wanna go – click here See that wasn’t so easy was it? And you were worried that it would take me a while to get to the point. Oh? Oh, yes, I guess I forgot to set up the link for that last one. You know, it makes me think back to that one time when I almost forgot to turn off the bathwater and I was workin’ away downstairs in the kitchen while my bath was runnin’ and well you can just imagine what happened when I realized I’d forgotten to pay the water bill and there wasn’t any water runnin’ for my bath in the first place. To leave, click here and type “uncle”

Thanksgiving Week 2011

Thanksgiving Week 2011

If you think Independence Day is America’s defining holiday, think again. Thanksgiving deserves that title, hands-down. Tony Snow

I celebrated Thanksgiving in an old-fashioned way. I invited everyone in my neighborhood to my house, we had an enormous feast, and then I killed them and took their land. Jon Stewart

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you’ll get a chance to relax with friends and family. When you grow weary from such exertions, please visit me for some tunes at one of this week’s venues.

The pre-Thanksgiving party kicks off at Sunset Grill in Godfrey on Wednesday the 23rd. The good times will continue post-Thanksgiving at some new venues for me. Friday I’ll be at Locos in St Charles and Sunday at The Weingarten in Belleville with a date in between at Blue Sky on Saturday afternoon.

This week’s song of the week is: One More track #2 from my 2010 release “Eons” It’s Lenny’s (bartender at The Shanti) favorite.

The schedule:

Wednesday Nov 23rd
The Sunset Bar & Grill
Godfrey, IL 8 pm

Friday Nov 25th
Locos Pub
St Charles, MO 9 pm

Saturday Nov 26th
Blue Sky Vineyards
Makanda, IL 2 pm

Sunday Nov 27th
The Weingarten
Belleville, IL 1 pm

Have a Happy Thanksgiving and a wonderful week! I hope to see you again soon, Bud

Walk right in it’s around the back
Just a half a mile from the railroad track
You can get anything you want at _______ ____________

Not only would it be rude to leave these discussions at this time, but it might be considered bullying since I have such a fragile ego and am lacking in self-esteem. Please don’t dis me on myspace or notin’ like dat. If you wanna leave…….. just go quietly.

And if that’s what you choose to do then – Eat me……. I’m a turkey. (Duke Tumatoe on youtube)

Income tax filing and payment day should be moved from April 15th to November 1st so it can be close to election day. People ought to have their tax bills fresh in mind as they go to vote.
Steven G. Calabresi

Salutations,

A “like” on Facebook is somewhat akin to a vote these days so please if you haven’t already, visit Bud Summers Music Page and show me some “like”.

Last weekend went well. I did more of a “rockin’ “ show at Parrots and Cunetto’s much to the delight of the patrons. Schnuck’s and Defiance were more blues/jazz type shows. I’ve already been booked for some 2012 dates at Culinaria and received a promise for several dates at The Yellow Farmhouse next season.

I’m only playing once this week – in Soulard at The Shanti on Thursday. It would be apropos to let you know that next week I’ll be doing a Thanksgiving Eve gig at Sunset Bar & Grill in Godfrey, IL at 8 pm Wednesday November 23rd. Show Chris & Kim a little “like” too on Sunset’s FB page.

After Thanksgiving I’ll be in St Charles at Locos on Friday and then Blue Sky on Saturday. Thanksgiving Sunday is a new one for me – The Weingarten in Belleville.

This week’s song of the week is another cut from the Floyd Duncan live show at the Lighthouse. Jason and Marc did a great job on this one. Desperate Times first appeared as track #10 on “Golden” released in May of 2008. This is usually a good live tune- it’s also track #3 from my solo “Live in Chicago” disc. I’m working on a Bandcamp profile and thought about putting some raw tracks up. Let me know if you think this should be one of them.

Thursday November 17th
The Shanti-Soulard

I hope to see you again very soon,

Bud

Well I was rollin’ down the road in some cold blue steel,

‘Cause we bad, we __________
Yeah we bad, we __________

Well I was movin’ down the road in my V-8 Ford,
I had a shine on my boots, I had my sideburns lowered.
With my New York brim and my gold tooth displayed,
Nobody give me trouble cause they know I got it made.
I’m bad, I’m __________

Happy Veteran’s Day! Don’t forget to thank the Vets in your life!

I’ll be playing several shows this week and hope to see you out and about.

On the list is a rare lunchtime slot at Culinaria, a visit to Parrots in St. Charles and a new venue for me in Defiance, MO at The Yellow Farmhouse .(This one is dependent on the weather so check my Bud Summers Music Page on facebook for updates) Nestled among these shows is another gig at a place that’s becoming one of my regular stops- Cunetto’s in Greenville.

Joe Frazier is gone. I can remember as a kid listening to the Frazier/Ali fights on the radio. No cable. No pay-per-view. Listening. Between rounds my older brother would re-enact the action with me being the punchee. This was great fun. R.I.P. Smokin’ Joe.

This week’s song of the week is my KDHX 2010 Artist Spotlight. My good friend Bob mentioned that he’d heard it recently and liked it. The folks at KDHX did a really nice job on it so if you haven’t heard it before, here’s your chance.

This Week:

St Louis, MO 11:30 am -1:30 pm

Hospitality consists in a little fire, a little food and an immense quiet.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

November is upon us and the summer is now truly giving way to the cool fall weather. Here’s to hospitality and warm fires by which to sit. The immense quiet you hear will be my schedule slowing down for the next few months. I’ll be playing a few shows here and there but will have some time for relaxing and to do some recording. I hope to release at least two new CDs in 2012.

Several people mentioned that they liked last week’s song of the week so I’ve decided to keep it on for another week. It’s arguably the best song from the attempt to record down at the Lighthouse. You may remember the original version- a rocker with a blues edge and some absolutely awful vocals but pretty cool guitar playing. It appeared as track #6 on Golden in May of 2008. I started playing a much more laid back blues/jazz version at my solo shows. It was also the first song during my solo set to kick off the “Eons” release party. That live video of “Now You’re Gone” has been played more times than any other video on my youtube site Budlier. But, I digress- here is The Floyd Duncan Trio (Marc Waters on percussion, Jason McAtee on bass and me on guitar and vocals) audio version of Now You’re Gone (FDO3).

This week:

Saturday Nov 5th
Candicci’s Italian Restaurant & Bar
Ballwin, MO 6:30 pm

I hope to see you again soon,
Bud

We get it on most every night
When that old moon gets so big and bright
It’s a supernatural delight
Everybody was ……. .. …. …………..

Everybody here is out of sight
They don’t bark, and they don’t bite
They keep things loose, they keep things light
Everybody was ……….. … …. ……………..

D……… i.. t… M…………………….
Everybody’s feelin’ warm and right
It’s such a fine and natural sight
Everybody’s …….. .. …. …………

We like our fun and we never fight
You can’t dance and stay uptight
It’s a supernatural delight
Everybody was ……. .. … ………

Stop scowlng and reaching for the remote- this isn’t television. If it was you’d see something like

but you don’t do you? Might as well admit you were wrong on that one. I hope you enjoyed this week’s show. If you’d rather not receive next week’s edition click here but I’m warning you that once you leave it’s easy to come back. Kind of like listeriosis at a cantaloupe bar. That reminds me of one of my favorite stories about the watermelon and honeydew that wanted to run off together but they cantaloupe.

I don’t know that there are real ghosts and goblins, but there are always more trick-or-treaters than neighborhood kids. ~Robert Brault

What do you get when you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its radius?
Pumpkin pi.

Greetings yet again. It seems that I finish one exciting week and I am starting a new one right away. A quick recap is in order.

Last Thursday I visited Springfield, IL and played a set at the 3rd Thursday Art Show above Norb Andy’s. It was a very good time and I also got to meet and hear Thistle n’ Thyme (a really good Celtic and traditional music group) and Micah Walk one of Springfield’s top rock/alt country groups. Afterward, I went to the Blue Grouch and sat in with Hipbone Sam -one of the top rock/blues bands in Springfield.

Friday my show at The Wine Rack in Poplar Bluff, MO was packed. It was the best show I’ve ever had there. Saturday there was a double-booking at Trails End in Cobden, IL but the owner was gracious enough to have us split the night and paid us both in full. I’ve been through some double bookings before and that’s only the 2nd time that it was resolved so amicably. A young fellow with a great voice and some outstanding original songs Eli Tellor was the other act and it was a pleasure listening to him.
Sunday was a beautiful day at Blue Sky Vineyards in Makanda, IL and I had a rather uneventful trip home.

This week’s song of the week is Now You’re Gone- (Floyd Duncan Trio- Bud Summers/Marc Waters/Jason McAtee

A St Louis club that shall remain nameless called me last week to notify me that my scheduled debut there won’t be happening after all. They’ve booked a private party for that night and they want to bring their own Karaoke! This sort of thing truly validates me as an artist. I was able to fill the date at another venue within an hour of hearing this news so it’s not all bad.

I hope to see gobs of goblins out this week on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. You’ll want to “boo- gie” all night long and get “sheet-faced”.

What do Hillbillies do for Halloween?
Pump-Kin

I’ll be playing my last scheduled Grafton show for the season on Sunday! Don’t despair- there are usually a few more last minute Grafton gigs before the weather turns too wintry.

Friday Oct 28th
Skootr’s
Mascoutah, IL 8 pm

Saturday Oct 29th
Candicci’s Italian Restaurant & Bar
Ballwin, MO 6:30 pm

Sunday Oct 30th
The Rotten Apple
Grafton, IL 2 pm

Have a Happy Halloween and please get out to hear some live music somewhere!
Bud

Most people are very happy to be on this list and enjoy receiving these little updates. However; even though it’s hard to imagine to any right-thinking person, there are some wrong-thinking people that do not appreciate the wit and wisdom that can be gained by a thorough perusal of these missives.
